About 50 protesters met at the Minneapolis Federal Courthouse May 15 to protest against the formation of Israel in 1948 and its effects on Palestine. The protesters called for the end of United States aid to Israel and return of land to Palestinian natives. May 14 is the anniversary of Israel’s declaration of independence, but Palestinians call it “Al Nakba” - Arabic for “the Catastrophe”.

Someone asked: “I was wondering how are you able to find the rallies before they happen? …by the time I hear about them they have already passed.”

It’s difficult to hear about protests, rallies and vigils before they happen. The biggest problem is they’re organized by numerous activist groups that have some collaboration but little centralization. Counting only groups under the category of “anti-war”, there might be a half dozen in the Twin Cities alone. The original OccupyMN group eventually became 4 different Occupy groups. Sometimes a single group disseminates information in multiple locations.

The closest thing to a central calendar might be @FibonacciBlue on Twitter where I announce every public activism event I hear about.

I don’t have an easy solution for finding out about events before they happen. Sometimes I hear about events on Facebook or Twitter, but many events are announced on individual group websites and not in social media. Mostly I use the brute force method and check a dozen group websites every couple weeks.

If I had to make a short list, these sites are probably the ones most likely to have events announced on them.

Around a thousand farmers gathered in Carrigaline, Co Cork, at the constituency office of Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to protest at EU proposals to reform the Common Agricultural Policy.

The Irish Farmers’ Association, which organised the demonstration, says farmers could lose up to 40% of their CAP payments, but Mr Coveney rejects this.

The Common Agricultural Policy is the EU’s framework to ensure that farmers earn a fair income in return for producing the food to feed Europe’s half a billion people.

Negotiations to reform the CAP are currently under way, with billions riding on the outcome.

The IFA is concerned that proposals by the European Commission to move to a system of flat-rate payments per hectare will cost 80,000 of the country’s most productive farmers a combined €250 million.
